On the mark with this incisive post, Trump is indeed childish, mercurial, narcissistic, I would call him a modern-day Achashveirosh. Yet one pales to imagine what Kamala would have done if Israel had taken unilateral steps against Iran
Could be you're right, and I tend to think you are. My own guess is that Kamala Harris's ceiling vis-a-vis Israel is a lot lower than Trump's - but her floor is higher, too.
I would add one further point. The Iranian attack was at 10 AM, which is 3 AM in the US. Israel could easily have attacked then before Trump woke up and responded to them. It almost seems as if Israel choreographed the attack to 1:30 PM so the president could get up and gain credit as a peacemaker by stopping their planes...
Labelling the man who just leveraged the full weight of the U.S. military to disable Iran’s nuclear weapons program a narcissistic “childish fool”, who equates recent events to a “college basketball game”, is more than a bit jarring to my ears.
Trump did more than simply ignore “important voices in the Republican Party and the MAGA movement”. He chose a course that the majority of Americans appear to have opposed. He did that because he believed Iran could not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons. And (as he has pointed out), despite lip-service paid by prior Presidents, he is the one who actually took action to stop Iran. Without U.S. intervention, it seems doubtful — at best, highly speculative — that Israel would have been able to accomplish this goal without incurring enormous risks and losses.
But Trump simultaneously owes a duty to the American people to minimize the potential of the U.S. being drawn into further hostilities, including risks to U.S. troops throughout the Middle East. Consequently, once the main objective was accomplished, it was not unreasonable for the President to insist on a cessation of further hostilities. It would not surprise me if such an expectation was expressed to Israel prior to the President’s commitment.
Israel had the choice to go it alone or enlist the U.S. President’s assistance. Given that it chose the latter, a degree of deference is warranted, as well as expressions of gratitude, not invective.
I would think none of it, right? That's why it's not yet a ceasefire. Particularly when Israel is trying to remove whatever it can of Iran's weaponry - designed specifically to attack and destroy Israel - I think that Israel not only can, but must, do everything it can in the time allotted.
It's very disheartening to see a part of the Israeli public be so unappreciative to Trump after the tremendous favor he did here. It's actually downright depressing.
I believe that we need to have nuance. Trump did something great, and then he did something childish and stupid. We can acknowledge both - and if we don't, we're courting shallow thinking and potentially falling into a personality cult.
Scott Kahn is an extremely ungrateful petulant man-child. Donald Trump went against his own best interests to protect Israel yet Scott cries about Trump wanting to have a say in the matter, something that he completely earned.
The hatred from Liberal Jews like Scott will always come to the surface. I am absolutely disgusted from people like Scott
I mostly agree with your assessment of Trump, and his rhetoric was super silly - as Israel took care of itself, Iran used it's time to kill and hurt a few more civilians.
But at the same time, I think it was a good thing he did to tell Israel to turn around and not bomb. That would've eased into escalation with more Israelis getting hurt. A ceasefire is a very good thing right now. We destroyed their nuclear capabilities and now we go back to the way it was before.
The PRESIDENT pulled off one of the finest works of combat success since the Second World War. I stand by Bibi, because I have the right to say I Stand With Israel...but the PRESIDENT is seeking a peace for all Israelis...
That's likely true - but that doesn't make everything he does correct. He wants peace for Israel, but he also wants peace for the mullahs of Iran - and if those contradict, he has no trouble lashing out at Israel.
Of course he's lashing out. He has proved that Israel is close to his heart again. And as often as I've stood for Bibi this was a knife to the back. Not everything Bibi does is correct and this was wrong…The PRESIDENT has put everything on the line and its damn sure Israel will not get the aid and protection it needs from any other authority.
I'm no fan of Bibi's, but what, exactly, was the knife? Before a ceasefire is implemented, and the enemy has targets with your name on it for future use, there is absolutely no reason to hold back; as I said, this isn't college basketball. And when the enemy breaks the ceasefire, why on earth should you be held back from responding appropriately and forcefully? I have every intention of voting Bibi out of office as soon as I can, but in this case I don't see what he did that any other Israeli leader would not have done - and they would all be correct.
Why are you voting Bibi out of office? He's the only barrier between Israel's continued survival and the same left wing shithouses that have tied Israel's hand's behind its back before Bibi was reelected. Israel has rediscovered the Lion of 1973 when I volunteered to go at the start of the war. Over the years Bibi brought good times, unfortunately good times bring soft men... This war has restored Israel's strength... Vote Bibi or his successor out and Israel will be in danger again.
Another author (Ariel) on substack that I restacked this morning pointed to it being a gulf world after all and Israel will have to deal with it...
There's a certain supplication and deference to the gulf Factor that delineates them from us and allows them to unite and go forward and thankfully Trump is navigating the waters and not yet throwing us under the bus but the triggered episode due to doing what was allowed in the allotted time was indeed cringy and notable as you wrote.
Oh and this is only the beginning. Trump is like a Mafia Don. Bibi now owes him. It's a forever debt which Trump will continue to collect on whenever the whim hits him. Look for him to end the war in Gaza next, regardless of what Bibi wants. It's gonna be interesting.

Which part of a 12-hour window before the ceasefire begins being an actual ceasefire is off limits for a reprisals?

Spot on. You describe Trump and his nonsense perfectly.
INGRATE . THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE.
