"And I certainly have not heard a mea culpa coming from those whose Torah, by their own admission, must have been faulty."

I have heard many, many of calls for תשובה and תפילה and strengthening our עבודת ה from the Rabbanim. And they are constantly talking about our sins, all the time, before the war as well. Perhaps you don't think they are talking about the "right" sins from your perspective. But they are *constantly* laying blame on their own communities spiritual failings, it is simply incorrect to say there is no mea culpa.

And you also can't ignore the sins of the roughly 70% of the country who are not Shomrei Torah.

I also think that you don't fully appreciate the reason why chareidim don't enlist. There is a general difference between Litvaks and Chassidim on this matter. For Litvaks, it's mainly because they see the Torah learning as overriding importance, and that there is no pressing need for them to enlist, and that they are contributing greatly to the nation with their Torah study. For chassidim, it's mainly because they believe, whether accurately or not, that the army is a malicious force of secular Zionism. There is perhaps somewhat of an overlap between these two positions.
